Excel chart resize shape to fit text greyed out

To stop adding text, press Esc or click outside of the shape. Hold down the Shift key before you start dragging the corner to keep the image proportionate. Under Format Axis>Alignment>Autofit the options are greyed out and "Allow text to overflow shape" is selected by default so all of my lables are cut off by the chart border. To resize it, click and drag one of the little squares that appear in the corners.
